CBD for your dog: These are the biggest benefits and risks

CBD for pets? What sounds strange may actually make sense. In our article we will tell you how CBD can help your dog and what advantages and disadvantages you can expect.

    What is CBD?
CBD is a natural ingredient of the cannabis sativa plant (hemp). The plant contains over 85 different cannabinoids - the most well-known being THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and can have beneficial effects on health. CBD is most commonly taken in the form of hemp oil.
    What makes CBD so healthy?
Hemp oil is a popular dietary supplement and has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. In particular, the omega-6 fatty acids contained in CBD are important - because the body can not produce these fatty acids themselves. In addition, hemp oil contains vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and many vitamins.
Because of these valuable nutrients - and because all mammals possess cannabinoid receptors - CBD may also be useful for dogs. For example, CBD can strengthen the heart, muscles, connective tissue and immune system, lower blood pressure and support bone growth.
By the way: CBD oil is produced by pressed seeds of useful hemp. For this, the ripe seeds must be cleaned and dried for several days. High quality hemp oil is always cold pressed!
    How does CBD affect dogs?
Cannabis oil can offer pets many health benefits. It can, for example, relieve anxiety and stress reactions, cure chronic pain or calm hyperactive dogs. In addition, CBD can improve neurological functions and support the digestive and immune systems. Since CBD contains many valuable nutrients, CBD is also possible as a nutritional supplement in healthy animals.
What are the risks and side effects?
Since hemp oil is a pure natural product, there are rarely side effects. The biggest risk is CBD overdose, which can lead to short-term stomach problems and a weak digestive system. Also allergic reactions of the dogs are possible in exceptional cases!
Important: Under no circumstances should you mix the hemp oil with chocolate and feed your dog with it. In such a case, there is danger to life for the animals - because chocolate contains the incompetent and dangerous theobromine for dogs.
How much CBD can a dog tolerate?
That depends on the size of your dog:
A small dog (up to 12 kilograms) can get between 2 and 5 milliliters of CBD oil per week.
Medium sized dog (up to 25 kilograms) can tolerate a weekly CBD dose of 5 to 10 milliliters.
A large dog (over 26 kilograms) can tolerate about 10 to 15 milliliters of CBD oil per week.
It is best to mix the CBD oil for your dog under the food or to dribble it into the drinking bowl. Start with a low dosage and see how your dog reacts to the CBD. If there are no complications, you can increase the dose gradually and according to the recommendations above. These are only rough guidelines! If you are unsure, consult a veterinarian.
Tip: Use a teaspoon as a dosing aid. One teaspoon equals about 5 milliliters of cannabis oil.
Cannabidiol is a healthy and legal supplement that is also suitable for pets. The plant extract contains many important nutrients, can offer great health benefits to humans and dogs and usually has no major side effects. Nevertheless, you should be careful and start with a low dose - because so far, the health effect of CBD is confirmed only by a few studies.
