  • Potential medicinal benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD)

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a product derived from cannabis. It is a type of cannabinoid that the chemicals are naturally found in marijuana plants. Although it comes from marijuana plants, CBD does not produce a "high" effect or any form of intoxication - this is caused by another cannabinoid known as THC.

There is some controversy about using cannabis products like CBD oil because of recreational marijuana. But there is growing awareness of the potential health benefits of CBD oil. Here's what you need to know about six potential CBD medical applications and where the research stands:
    1. Anxiety
CBD can help you to cope with anxiety. Researchers think it can change the way your brain reacts to serotonin receptors, a chemical linked to mental health. Receptors are tiny proteins attached to your cells that receive chemical messages and help your cells respond to various stimuli.
One study found that a 600mg dose of CBD helped people with social anxiety talk. Other early animal studies have shown that CBD can help relieve anxiety by:
    Reduce stress
Decreasing physiological effects of anxiety, such as increased heart rate
Improving the Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    Stroke in case of insomnia
    2. Anti-seizure
CBD was on the news as a potential treatment for epilepsy. The research is still in the early days. Researchers are testing how much CBD can reduce the number of seizures in people with epilepsy and how safe it is. The American Epilepsy Society states that cannabidiol research provides hope for seizure abnormalities and that research is currently underway to better understand its safe use.
A 2016 study worked with 214 people with epilepsy. Study participants added oral doses of 2 to 5 mg CBD per day to their existing anti-epileptic medications. Researchers monitored the participants for 12 weeks, recording all negative side effects and checking the frequency of their seizures. Overall, participants had 36.5 percent fewer seizures per month. However, 12 percent of participants experienced severe side effects.
    3. Neuroprotective
Researchers are looking at a receptor in the brain to discuss the ways that CBD could help people with neurodegenerative diseases, the diseases that worsen the brain and nerves over time. This receptor is known as CB1.
Researchers are investigating the use of CBD oil for treatment:
    Alzheimer's disease
    Multiple sclerosis (MS)
    Parkinson's disease
    stroke
CBD oil can also reduce inflammation, which can aggravate neurodegenerative symptoms. More research is needed to fully understand the effects of CBD oil on neurodegenerative diseases.
    4. Pain relief
The effects of CBD oil on the receptors of your brain can also help you cope with pain. Studies have shown that cannabis can provide some benefits when treated after chemotherapy. Other preclinical studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health also consider the role of cannabis in relieving symptoms caused by:
    arthritis
    chronic pain
    MS pain
    Muscle aches
    Spinal cord injury
Nabiximole (Sativex), a multiple sclerosis drug from a combination of TCH and CBD, is approved in the UK and Canada to treat MS pain. However, the researchers believe that CBD in the drug can do more with their anti-inflammatory properties than by acting against the pain. Clinical trials of CBD are needed to determine if it should be used for pain management or not.
    5. Anti-acne
The effects of CBD on receptors in the immune system can help reduce overall inflammation in the body. In turn, CBD oil can provide benefits for acne management. A human study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that the oil prevents activity in sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for producing sebum, a natural oily substance that hydrates the skin. However, too much sebum can cause acne.
Before you consider CBD oil for acne treatment, it is worthwhile to discuss with your dermatologist. More human studies were needed to evaluate the potential benefits of CBD for acne.
    5. Cancer treatment
Some studies have examined the role of CBD in preventing cancer cell growth, but research is still in the early stages. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) says CBD can help relieve cancer symptoms and cancer treatment side effects. However, the NCI does not fully support any form of cannabis as a cancer treatment. The effect of CBD, which is promising for cancer treatment, is its ability to moderate and alter inflammation as the cell proliferates. CBD has the effect of reducing the ability of some types of tumor cells to reproduce
