  • New study: How effective is CBD oil in treating pain in dogs?

A recent Cornell University pharmacokinetic and clinical study in the US suggests that 2 mg / kg of cannabidiol (CBD) oil twice daily in dogs with osteoarthritis may contribute to greater comfort and activity. The summary was presented to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Summit 2017 in Indianapolis and is currently subject to a peer review.

    The science
The study was led by Joe Wakshlag, DVM, PhD, DACVN, DACVSMR, Cornell's associate professor and nutrition section chief. The objectives, according to the abstract, were to determine the basic oral pharmacokinetics, to determine the safety and to assess the efficacy of CBD oil in the treatment of pain in dogs with osteoarthritis.
The team pharmacokinetically studied two different doses of CBD oil - 2 mg / kg and 8 mg / kg -. They determined the elimination half-life at both doses to be 4.2 hours. Both doses did not show any negative side effects; However, serum chemistry showed that alkaline phosphatase activity increased (p = 0.005).
The researchers investigated the pain management properties of CBD oil in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study. Dogs either received 2 mg / kg CBD oil every 12 hours or received a placebo oil according to the abstract. Dogs were treated for four weeks with a two-week washout period. The owners of the dogs completed questionnaires and veterinarians performed assessments prior to treatment and in the second and fourth week - including physical examination, hematology and serum chemistry. The Canine Brief Pain Inventory Score and the Hudson activity score (a visual analog scale questionnaire to assess pain and lameness in dogs) determine the response to treatment. All variables were analyzed with a mixed variance model. A p-value of <0.05 was determined to be significant.
The results seem to support anecdotal reports on the benefits of CBD oil. The veterinary examination showed that CBD oil relieved the pain (p <0.03) and that the results of the Canine Shortness Inventory and Hudson activity showed a clinically significant reduction in pain and an increase in CBD treatment activity (p <0.001).
According to Dr. In addition to this study, Wakshlag is conducting a pharmacokinetic and safety study in cats for his team, and there are plans for additional studies on the efficacy of CBD oil in acute pain management, behavioral management, cat pain, and concomitant chemotherapy in oncology patients.
    The law
Science is now beginning to support the benefits of CBD oil consumption in pets, but what does the law say? First, hemp plants contain less than 0.3 percent of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive chemical found in cannabis. In 2014, President Obama signed the 2014 Farm Bill, which allowed the study and cultivation of industrial hemp for limited purposes. This led to the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2015, which allowed American farmers to continue producing and cultivating industrial hemp. This legislation removed hemp from the list of controlled substances as long as hemp did not contain more than 0.3 percent THC. In Austria and Europe similar laws and hemp products under 0.3% THC, or 0.2% THC are legally available.
